Background: Effective and skilful communication is crucial and an important element in the quality of nursing care. This enables nurses to assess patients' needs and provide them with the appropriate physical care, emotional support, knowledge transfer and exchange of information. However, nurses finds it difficult to communicate effectively and therapeutically with their patients.

Purpose: To identify the nurses’ and adult inpatients’ perceptions of barriers to effective nurse-patient communication

Abstract

Background: Smokers with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) are often unable to quit smoking without assistance. The effort to maintain their self-efficacy while quitting smoking is also challenged by their withdrawal symptoms. Thus, smoking cessation intervention with pharmacotherapy at a hospital based quit smoking clinic, is aimed at sustaining support for such patients following hospital discharge.

Objective: To examine the effect of smoking cessation intervention with pharmacotherapy on patients’ smoking cessation rate, self-efficacy in quitting, and on their management of withdrawal symptoms.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the nurse managers’ perceptions related to leaderships and management in a tertiary teaching hospital in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study design was conducted on a randomly selected sample of nurse managers (n=152) using a structured self-administered questionnaire. The findings confirmed that nurse managers’ perception of leadership behaviors were significantly related to their perceptions of workplace empowerment structures, access to opportunity, information, support and resources, formal and informal power; and their perceptions of empowerment and autonomy. It can be concluded that improvements in supportive environment in healthcare is needed to make the successful nurse leadership and management possible as part of multi-professional cooperation.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was toevaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention program on the knowledge and practice of Intensive Care Nurses with regard to Enteral Feeding administration.

Methods: In this Quasi-Experimental study of one group of subjects, pre-test and post-test design was used and the data was compared pre- and post-intervention. Sixty-five ICU nurses in the Intensive Care Unit responded to a questionnaire, with a response rate 91.4%. Observations of ICU nurses’ practice were carried outafter the implementation of educational intervention for all ICU staff nurses.

Results:Before the study was carried out, the nurses revealed that theirprimary source of knowledge was consultation with their colleagues. Comparison of nurses’ knowledge scores before and after the implementation of educational intervention revealed significant differences in the level of knowledge, which increased significantly after participation in the educational program.Observation of nurses’ practice also revealed improvements in Enteral Feeding administration after the implementation of educational intervention using evidence-based guidelines. No significant association was found between the nurses’ knowledge level and demographic characteristics such as age, education level and working experience.

Conclusions:The results of this study indicate that a structured educational program on evidence-based Enteral Feeding guidelines has a significant, positive effect on nurses’ knowledge and improves their practices. The educational program in this studysignificantly increased the Intensive Care Nurses’ knowledge andpractice scoreson Enteral Feeding administration in the Intensive Care Unit.
